Building in Houston: what to know
Houston has no traditional zoning code, which is one reason infill building is common there. Lots are still governed by the city's development rules on lot size and setbacks, and by any deed restrictions recorded on the property, so check both before you buy. Permits run through the City of Houston, or the county for lots outside city limits.
Before you buy the lot
- Confirm utilities, easements and any deed restrictions on the lot
- Get plans and a line-item budget priced for local labor and materials
- Check recent sales of new homes nearby to set your sale price
